1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

You are here

Take the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge!

Why should my child participate?
Reading to your child is one of the most powerful ways to boost their brain power. The simple and enjoyable act of sharing books helps your child learn pre-reading skills such as understanding the sounds letters make, developing vocabulary, and building background knowledge - all important skills that help prepare your child for learning to read and entering kindergarten.

How can we get started?
  1. Register for this program online or at the library. If you register online, be sure to pick up your starter packet at your preferred branch. Your packet will include initial reading logs, My Stickers folder, reading suggestion pamphlets, and a bookmark.
  2. Each time you read with your child, record the book in your log.  Books may be read and recorded more than once. You can also count the books your child hears in storytime, in daycare or preschool. Books can be from anywhere, not just the library!
  3. Bring your log(s) to the library. Your child will receive a sticker for each 100-book milestone. At some levels, they will also earn a small prize!

Milestone Rewards
While we fully believe that reading is it's own reward, we also want to celebrate your child's participation in this challenge!
  • Sticker each time you reach the next level of 100 books
  • 300 books: sticker and bubbles
  • 600 books: sticker and hacky ball
  • 800 books: sticker and tour of the circulation desk (check out your own books!)
  • 1,000 books: sticker and tote bag
Prizes will be awarded on the first run through of the program for each participant..

Reading Suggestions
There are so many choices! We compiled a list of classic and new favorites, they are tagged 1000 Books Before Kindergarten in our catalog. While browsing, look for books that have rich illustrations or photos, engaging storytelling, characters your child knows, or topics of interest for your child. Find stories that you loved as a child. When in the library look for the Pre-Reader recommendations handout, or ask a librarian.
